2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased gamesâFrog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hopsâincorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To grasp this rise, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming appears particularly strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.
Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commencedâand the chance for moreâthe stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
If these games are received positivelyâand historically, games from this showcase have a strong track recordâwe could very well be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
