Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
