Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back discloses that popular personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond in advance to obtain a strong position there. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in return for his soul.
This raises the question: How is Rosie sufficiently strong to elevate Alastor over every other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that encompasses a great deal, moving into season 3,” the creator explains. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The solution might be various factors, but the answer is in season 3. I'm very excited for people to witness it.”
It is uncertain how long viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the creator frequently remarks that animation is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she states holding off on those details is an important part of maintaining the second season's attention where it belongs.
“The challenge of any agreement with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The creator promises that season 3 will address the questions fans have been posing, like why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the deals these humans are making, and everything — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides a further look into how the main characters of Sinner Demons looked like as humans, following after seeing another character's Victorian-era mortal appearance in the second episode. The creator explains that a lot of thought was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold so much weight,” she says. “They vary from looking really different from their demon form to seeming very similar. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with a design that symbolizes the personality, as opposed to selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had extended hair of that style in that historical period.’ But simultaneously, we think the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I'm excited for people to view additional of what the human forms look like.”
