Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
